Opportunities in the Lab

Let's work together to tackle emerging infectious diseases in wildlife.

I seek to prepare students to be innovative thinkers and effective problem solvers through teaching and mentorship. I enjoy mentoring students and see mentorship as being an active participant in the academic, professional, and personal development of undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs. I am committed to embodying a role model for students founded in professionalism, integrity, compassion, and a thirst for discovery.

I am currently looking to recruit at least two graduate students (1 Masters/1 PhD student) for the Fall 2024 semester. Graduate students can enroll in degree programs within the Ecosystem Science and Management department as well as the interdepartmental Ecology Program at Penn State.

  • Masters student position - The position is funded  by an NSF EEID grant focused on identifying how socioeconomic decisions made by businesses and consumers drive pathogen dynamics in a wildlife trade network. This position will lead laboratory experiments to identify how conditions in captivity shape Bd infection dynamics for commonly traded species . The student will also have the opportunity to complete additional work based on their interests.  If you are interested, please check out this position description here and apply by November 17th, 2023.

  • PhD student position - This position will contribute to research focused on disentangling the role of microbiome function and host defenses and how their interplay contributes to host resilience or disease progression. The student will have flexibility to design field studies and/or laboratory experiments within this framework, and the opportunity to work with native US species, frog species from Madagascar or European fire salamanders. If you are interested, please check out this position description here and apply by November 17th, 2023.

I will also co-mentor a PhD student with Dr. David Miller. This position will be exploring disease dynamics, immune function, and behavior in relation to temperature. If you are interested, please check out the position description herand apply by November 17 2023.

Postdocs

I will be looking to recruit a postdoc starting in the Spring or Fall of 2024. More information will be coming soon about the focus of this position. Please reach out to me via email to discuss these upcoming opportunities.
I am also always willing to support postdocs in applying for their own funding through programs like NSF or Smith Fellows.

If you're a motivated undergraduate student interested in gaining research experience, let's discuss your research interests and whether they might be a good fit for the lab. We will be looking to hire research assistants for experimental and field work, and also to have students conduct independent research. If you're interested in discussing options, please email me a resume and a short message describing your interests.
